Does Habitat for Humanity give houses away for free?

No. Habitat homeownership is a partnership. Prospective homeowners apply and, if selected, participate in the program, contribute sweat equity and purchase their home with an affordable mortgage.

How do I apply for a Habitat home?

Start with our Homeownership information packet (https://habitatforhumanitymcd.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/H4H-TheHomeownerProcess.pdf) to learn about the program and application process. If anything in the application is unclear, please ask us.

Does Habitat only build new houses?

No. For example, at the moment, we are focused solely on house renovations. We purchase or are donated a house and land that we then renovate into a safe, well-functioning living environment. Once it's done, we begin looking at applications to see who is the best fit for the home. We love nothing more than taking an old, dilapidated house and turning it into a home.

Do I need construction experience to volunteer?

No. There are ways to help for people with many different skills, experience levels, and physical capabilities---including seated carpentry support, feeding crews, organizing supplies, taking photographs, sharing your hard-earned professional wisdom with younger workers, and being a safety guardian.

Can my business, church, school or organization volunteer as a group?

Yes! We have so much fun with groups! Contact us and tell us about yourselves, approximately how many people would like to help and what you enjoy doing. We’ll talk with you about current opportunities.

What kinds of donations can I make?

Financial contributions are always useful, and we may also have needs for building materials, property or professional services. Because needs change from project to project, please contact us before delivering donated materials.

Can I sponsor a Habitat project?

Yes. Businesses, organizations and individuals can help support our local work. Project milestones show how community support is moving current work forward; donations support Habitat for Humanity of McDonough County’s work where needed most. Check our home page (HabitatForHumanityMcD.com) for our current work in progress.

Is Habitat for Humanity a Christian organization?

Habitat is a Christian housing organization, and people of all backgrounds are welcome to volunteer, support the work and apply for homeownership.

Is Habitat for Humanity of McDonough County the same organization as Habitat for Humanity International?

We are part of the Habitat network, but local Habitat organizations in the United States are separate legal entities governed locally.

Where does my donation go?

It stays local, in McDonough County. Donations support our local Habitat work. We use community support carefully to advance our affordable-housing mission and current needs.
